Arthritis is a relatively common condition and there are over 100 different kinds of this disease. This condition causes inflammation of the joints. The main symptoms associated with Arthritis are pain and stiffness of the joints, swelling and redness around the affected area, and for some kinds of this disease, a fever and swelling of the lymph nodes are possible. The causes of this condition range from injury or wear on the joints to hereditary factors and autoimmune diseases. Some factors that increase one’s chance of developing this condition are being overweight, previous joint injury, and repeatedly stressing a joint. While these factors may increase a person’s risk, anyone can develop this disease.
Fact: According to the Canadian Arthritic Network (CAN), arthritis affects 4.2 million Canadians. Of this number, more than 600,000 are unable to work.
Fact: More than half of those affected by arthritis are under 65 years of age.
Fact: Women make up almost 60% of those with this condition.
