Facts & Figures - Stroke

A stroke is a life-threatening condition that results when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. This causes a lack of oxygen that leads to brain damage. Symptoms appear suddenly, and include severe headache, difficulty in speaking or understanding others, vision changes, difficulty swallowing, weakness on one side of the face or body, and confusion. Immediate medical attention is required for the best chances of survival and recovery.

Fact: Diabetics are two to four times more likely to experience a stroke than non-diabetics.

Fact: Emergency medical treatment within the first three hours gives the best chance for survival and recovery.
