Facts & Figures - Acquired Brain Injury
The symptoms of acquired brain injuries vary a great deal, as the category of disease covers such a broad spectrum of disorders. Depending on the source of the brain injury and the area of the brain affected, patients may find their attention span diminished. It is also common for critical thinking skills to be impaired, as well as to experience emotional outbursts and difficulty communicating. Some people find themselves suffering from dizziness, headaches and a loss of taste or smell sensations.
Fact: While symptoms can be the same, traumatic and acquired brain injuries are categorized differently. Traumatic brain injuries are largely the result of accidents and outside forces damaging the brain. An acquired brain injury can result from an infection, stroke, tumor or any other non-traumatic event.
Fact: People with acquired brain injuries can experience numerous symptoms and still maintain their intellectual capacity. Many people learn to adapt and can still live independent lives.
