Facts & Figures - Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease is a nervous system degenerative disorder caused by the unexplained death of dopamine-containing cells in the midbrain. Early symptoms include tremors, rigidity, and difficulty walking. Later symptoms may include behavioral and cognitive difficulties, such as dementia and emotional disturbances.
The early motor problems are referred to as a "parkinsonian syndrome" or "parkinsonism." Parkinson's disease is just one form of parkinsonism. Other parkinsonian syndromes may mimic it in the beginning but behave differently over time.
Parkinson's has no known cause, although a few unusual cases have had a hereditary component. Exposure to certain pesticides as well as tobacco use seem to be risk factors. The disorders gets progressively worse and is currently incurable, but manageable with treatment.
Fact: Most cases of Parkinson's occur after the age of 50.
Fact: 20% to 25% of patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease are eventually found to have a different form of parkinsonism.
